Base recycling stops taking some plastics

Due to cost and market demands, Navy Whidbey Recycle will no longer accept plastics 3-7 starting March 2.

The change only applies to outside walk-in customers and there will be no change for on-base collections.

Navy Whidbey Recycle, in Building 2555, provides recycling and composting services to base commands and departments through routine and call-in collections.

In addition, the facility provides a drop-off program for recyclable materials that is open to military, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and family members five days a week, excluding federal holidays and weather events.

Walk-ins can continue to recycle plastics including fizzy drink bottles, oven-ready meal trays, water bottles, milk and detergent bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, cereal box liners, and grocery trash and retail bags.

For non-accepted materials, those recycling can call to find an acceptable way to dispose of the item.
